It's Here!

What's crunchy and cold and white - loved by few and dreaded by many?  Yeah....  you guessed it.  Snow.

It's here!  We woke this morning to our first snowfall.  I know that our nation's heartland received a foot of the stuff, but with our temperatures hovering around 32° - 33° we're getting a band of freezing rain mixed with wet snow this early morning.  What can I say?  It's that time of year!

Last week we took advantage of a break from all the rain we've been having and we finished putting away and securing all of our outdoor objects.  In preparation for winter, we drained our concrete birdbath, put away the bowl and covered the base.  My husband cleaned our gutters and prepared the lawn mowers for winter storage.  We stored away all of the lawn chairs, yard decorations and grill.  And hubby made sure the cars have all the proper fluids, good tires and snow scrapers.

Yet it seems like no matter how much we think we're prepared for winter, we're still not completely ready for it.  The older we get, the more we dislike having to get out and shovel and drive in the snow and ice.

Do you remember winter when you were a child?  If you were like me and lived in a snowy area, you couldn't wait for a "snow day" when school was closed.  Ironic I know - that school was closed because it was too snowy to venture out, yet we'd bundle in layer after layer of warm clothes and rush outside before it was light.  No matter where the mercury in the thermometer hovered, we wanted a full day of trudging through it, sledding and sliding over it, laying in it to make snow angels, balling it up for some fierce snow-ball fights, and creating very artistic snow-forts and snowmen (and snow-women).  Every now and then we'd even take up a snow shovel and clear our and our neighbor's driveways.  Oh the good old days!  We'd remain outside until we couldn't feel our fingers and toes or until darkness fell - whichever came first.  I can still hear my Mom yelling from the other room, "Don't walk on the carpet, stay by the door to get your snowy clothes off!"

Then smiling with rosy, chapped faces, we'd sit at the kitchen table, wrap our tingling fingers around a cup of hot chocolate (with marshmallows if we had them), and inhale the warm, cocoa steam.  Aaaaahhhhh.....  The days when snow was FUN!  I confess that I miss the carefree times of childhood winters.

Today, the responsibilities of shoveling, digging out, scraping, de-icing and trying to safely walk and drive in the stuff have caused snow to completely lose its appeal.  At my age I really don't think it would be wise for me to try to recapture that childhood winter fun.  My neighbors would call the authorities if they looked out their windows to find me throwing myself in my yard flailing around making snow angels.  Not a good idea.  I guess I have to settle for the fact that although I think the first snow is very pretty, I really dread that it signals the realization that we'll now have to deal with it in varying forms and measurements for the next four months.  Because - it's here!  Argh.

What about you?  Did you get any of this first snow?  How much did you get?  How do you deal with winter?

Wishing you blessings and warmth (and hot chocolate)!

Deb

  3. JBR,
Thank you for visiting here today. That squirrel tried over and over again to get into our bird feeder, but finally settled to eat the seeds that fell on the ground.

  4. Soraya,
Your English is GREAT! I understand you very well.
I'm going to have to learn more about Holland. I really don't know much about the weather there. Thank you for sharing with me about your winters.
You're right, shoveling can be very dangerous in the bitter cold and ice. We haven't had enough snow yet to shovel, but it's coming! I'm praying that you and your husband stay safe and healthy during the winter season!!
    Blessings on your day too.

  5. Deb, reminded me of a life long dream that I know will never come true. I have always wanted to go to the highest hill and get a sleigh and zoom down that hill. Can you believe we have an antique sleigh? Can you believe I still would like to have that sleigh ride? Nothing wrong with dreaming, is there?

We had 33 degrees this morning. Just fireplace
weather. Love your background! Love and blessings.

  6. Hi Deb, We got our first two snows several weeks ago-we had about 8". I love staying inside and watching it but like you it is harder to shovel as we get older-but then we've only lived in snow country for four years now.
I'm very cautious going out in it though and have already fallen on ice once. We are supposed to get hit tonight with a huge storm.
    Hugs to you today-stay warm.

  8. Hi there Aliene,
I'll tell ya.... If you come over and make snow angels with me, I'll zoom down that high hill with you! lol
The last time I did that was when our son was little. We found the biggest hill we could find and my husband, son and I rode sleds down like lightning! Then we realized we had to haul them back up. ha ha.
Hugs to you my friend! Stay warm!

  9. Hi Noreen,
I remember reading about your heavy snow! I really enjoy being indoors and watching the animals and the sun play across the snow and listening to the silence and stillness of a snowy day. But yeah... like you I'm cautious about traveling on it. I haven't fallen in a few years, but I well remember the last time I did. So I understand!
Hugs back to you and you stay warm too!

  10. Hi Philip,
Thank you for joining in! I'm blessed that you came to visit.
I know some people in Andhra Pradesh, India. I've never visited there, but I've seen photos and I'm somewhat familiar with your area.
May the Most High God bless you and your ministry. May your words be the words of Jesus as you preach and teach, and may the Holy Spirit empower you to reach and touch and heal and deliver the people of the communities that surround you.
    Many blessings!
    Deb

  11. Hi Deb,
What an enjoyable post of memories of snow days. :) I guess you might think me odd, but I love the snow. Even in these years where I have the responsibility of clearing it. I just can't help loving the way it smells and how it looks when all the trees are weighed down. I love everything about it especially driving in it. :)

Thanks for sharing and I hope these snow months pass quickly for you.

    God bless,
    <><

  12. Growing up in sunny southern California, snow was something that happened on the mountaintops around us. As you probably know, it doesn't even get down to freezing (32 degrees) here. We had to travel up the hill to enjoy the winter wonderland. I never actually saw snow fall until I was about 18 years old, but I do enjoy God four season cycle. I know that I am missing out on a great experience, but I can't say I miss the cold and the work that it brings. It is a pretty sight to look at on the mountaintops.

  13. Hi Deb....we got snow yesterday...it looked so pretty as it fell but once it hit the ground. Gone. All of it. Enjoy every minute of the white stuff and drinking the hot cocoa

  14. Child of God,
I don't think you odd at all. I'm glad someone enjoys the snow as much as you do.
I highly agree that it's beautiful and everything about it seems to speak 'sparkling' and 'clean' and 'fresh' and 'crisp'.
But that's about as far as I can go with liking the snow - lol.
May the Lord grant you lots of refreshing snow days!
    Hugs and blessings,
    Deb

  15. Brian,
I lived in Tustin, California for just over 3 yrs. And although I enjoyed the warmer temps, I found myself missing the drastic seasonal changes that I grew up with. My dad even sent me a gift that came in a box of dried leaves from our yard because he knew I missed the colors, feel, smell and texture of autumn.
I remember seeing that snow on the distant mountain tops - beautiful!!
It's difficult for me to grasp that many people (like you) don't see snow falling as much as we do. I can't help but wonder at the wonder that must have been for you (at age 1) to see snow falling for the first time.
Thank you for reminding me of the small blessings!

  16. G'morning Sarah,
Our first snowfall didn't last long either. The sun came out bright and warmed everything up.
I promise to try to enjoy the coming snows (from inside anyway) and to take lots of photos.
Wanna join me in some hot chocolate? hee hee
